If You’re Interested in Open-Water Swimming, These Beginner Tips Are Essential

Openwaterswimming.eu - do, 13/08/2020 - 13:31

I've been swimming for exercise for over 15 years. I feel my best - physically, mentally, and emotionally - when I'm swimming in a pool, happily lost in the repetition of logging lap after lap in my lane.

But put me in a lake or an ocean, and I feel like a fish out of water. I'm a strong swimmer, but my confidence instantly evaporates when it comes to open-water swimming.

That's likely because open-water swimming is "dramatically different" than swimming competitively in a pool, according to Coach Morgon Latimore, Ironman-certified coach and level three coach, and lead adult learn-to-swim instructor at US Masters Swimming.

Is it safe to swim in the River Thames?

Openwaterswimming.eu - di, 28/07/2020 - 22:22

The Thames has a reputation as a dirty river. It’s not totally undeserved. I took part in the notorious Hampton Court to Kingston swim in October 2012, when I was one of 338 people who reported getting ill. No specific cause was identified. It was most likely a bacterial or viral infection. In the days prior to the race, rainfall was several times the average for the time of year.

The river may therefore have been contaminated with sewage from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), that can spill into the river during periods of heavy rain.

Considered one of the greatest ultra-swimmers of all time, she has so far tamed the treacherous stretch of water between England and France 31 times and is planning to add four more crossings within the next month.

If successful, she will beat the most by a male, which at 34 is held by Kevin Murphy. Fellow Briton Alison Streeter is the greatest of all-time, completing the swim 43 times.

"I didn't make it across the English Channel - but training for it bought me time"

Openwaterswimming.eu - vr, 24/07/2020 - 23:08

Before swimming the English Channel, Lee Brogan was struggling with his mental health. Training for it gave him the time he needed to get better.

Training alone for hours on end in cold, rough seas, battling currents, swells and jellyfish, all in the knowledge that you’ll have to wake up the following day and do it all over again. For most people, the life of an aspiring English Channel swimmer is not one they would wish to lead.

But for 32-year-old Lee Brogan, it was a lifeline.

Channel Challenge - do, 23/07/2020 - 13:41

How ice swimming helped me get control of my anxiety

Openwaterswimming.eu - di, 21/07/2020 - 22:10

I knew that I could die if I stayed in there too long. I kept asking myself if it was safe, or was I stupid for exposing myself to the extreme cold in an icy lake. The level of pain that gripped my whole body was intense and I had to fight hard to stay in control of my thoughts. As my extremities started to go numb and the alarm bells inside my head intensified, I focused on my breath. That helped. A little.

Now, whenever I look at this photo of me bathing in the freezing water in the heart of winter, I’m amazed at how relaxed I look. I almost give off the impression that I’m finding it effortless to be in there.

Swedish swimmers Victor Johansson and Marcus Holmquist are going to attempt to swim 30 km in Sweden’s lake Vättern at the beginning of August in order to raise money for the World Food Program USA.

The lake is the second largest in Sweden, behind Lake Vänern and in the summer it reaches a temperature range of 12 and 17 degrees Celsius (54 to 63 degrees Fahrenheit).

Johannsson and Holmquist intend on taking the route across the lake from Visingsö to Jönköping, which has only been crossed by a swimmer once when Christer Junefelt did so on September 11, 1968.
