How has COVID-19 affected English Channel swims this year?

vr, 03/07/2020 - 22:15

Student Daniel Shailer has a Channel crossing booked for this year. He's been looking into how the coronavirus pandemic has affected Channel swimming this year.

Channel swimming is always unpredictable, and that has never been more true than this year. Government restrictions on unnecessary travel, social distancing and international travel forced all Channel swims in June to cancel and placed much of the rest of the season in jeopardy.

With lockdown gradually easing however, many swimmers (myself included) are hoping crossings will begin at some point in July, albeit with a few key changes.

do, 02/07/2020 - 22:07

The water may be cold but the health benefits keep these daring divers coming back.

Marianne Clark, a fitness and endurance coach, is a member of the oldest swimming club in Britain, located in Brighton. “The physical sensation of immersing yourself in cold water is a really life-affirming one,” she says. “I like the frisson of danger that comes with the sea, the fact that the water can be unpredictable.

But the bottom line is that it makes me feel good—physically and mentally strong and it gives a sense of liberation.”

Wild Swimming for beginners

vr, 26/06/2020 - 23:08

Why go ‘wild’ swimming

There is something slightly naughty, a little bit scary and wonderfully invigorating about leaving your wetsuit at home, and entering open water with just your skin (and perhaps a swimming costume) between you and the elements.
Freed from the thermal and neoprene protection of a wetsuit, cold water immersion provides a sense of elation and relaxation, soothes muscle aches, relieves depression and boosts the immune system. It’s also a fantastically convenient way to explore the countryside, with no kit to lug around.

Tales of the Riverbank

vr, 26/06/2020 - 23:04

We have tides in the river here but we are not an estuary. Here we are above where the ocean tide meets the down-flowing stream. We are quite up the river, well away from the sea in a winding route. There is no tidal bore so the tide is backed-up river water, not brackish estuarine water. The salt tide pushes upstream, then the brackish tide pushes further up until it reaches Loneswimmer Tower, where the tide is all fresh water, but where, still, it is a tide, a mesotidal reach.

Fifty kilometres away along the coast, the Three Sisters of the Suir, Nore and Barrow empty past Hook and Crook Heads and level out a huge plain under the Celtic Sea.

Overcoming fear in the open water

wo, 10/06/2020 - 23:01

A common challenge I hear from athletes about open water swimming is how to overcome fear and anxiety in the water.

I have found that having athletes focus on three key steps in preparation goes a long way to reducing stress, while increasing safety and enjoyment.

The first step is one I learned from a visually impaired athlete who attended one of my swim clinics.

Swimmer’s Itch - protective measures, detection and treatment

wo, 10/06/2020 - 22:52

Swimming at sunset, walking across moors or city parks to splash into dawn: these are glimpses of paradise for an outdoor swimmer. Sadly, in summer, there is a serpent in our garden: a tiny, fork-tailed, wormy parasite.

This parasite (of the family Schistosomatidae) causes ‘swimmer’s itch’ or more correctly cercarial dermatitis: an allergic reaction to the parasite – in its cercarial stage – burrowing into your skin.

Here are the places to go wild swimming in and around London this weekend

vr, 29/05/2020 - 23:03

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, is there anything better than diving, head-first, into some of London’s under-the-radar wild swimming spots?

Last year the British Medical journal actually proved that wild swimming had a positive impact on our mental health, in the same way that forest bathing gives us a much-needed dose of nature therapy, wild swimming too helps us focus on key senses and surroundings, the splish-splosh of water and sounds of chattering coots and chirpy ducklings making us happier and calmer.

vr, 15/05/2020 - 22:49

Open-water swimming is good for your triathlon fitness, your state of mind and your soul. James Witts explains how to safely make the most of every different body of water now the current restrictions have been lifted in England
Research from Sport England calculates that 4.1 million of us swam in lakes, lochs, rivers and seas between November 2017 and 2018. And you can see why.

“There’s no substitute to seeing the sky and nature around you when you swim, whatever the season,” Lou reasons. “Swimming throughout the year in cold water has the added benefit of relieving aches and pains. But you also enjoy a rush of adrenaline that lifts your mood. I feel like I’ve really achieved something.”

Boris Johnson gives the go-ahead for socially distanced open water swimming in England but RLSS UK and Swim England urge caution due to safety fears

ma, 11/05/2020 - 23:01

Some outdoor sports that can safely operate under the new government guidelines, including social distancing, will be able to restart from Wednesday 13 May – according to Boris Johnson in Prime Minister’s Question Time this afternoon that includes open water swimming with one other person as long as social distancing is observed at all times. This guidance applies to England only.

As of Wednesday 13 May we will be able to take part in "unlimited exercise" and "drive to other destinations, but only with members of your own household." National parks and areas of the UK that are popular with swimmers such as Cornwall and the Lake District are urging the public not to travel to those areas for fear of precipitating a second spike in coronavirus cases.
