With no Open Water World Championships this season the competition in the open water events was diversified amongst several high-level competitions with the main championship meets being the Pan Pacific Championships and the European Championships.
With swimmers competing at either or, picking just one athlete for the Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year was a difficult task. At the European Championships there were many viable options. The 5km, 10km, and 25km swims were all won by different athletes with only three athletes earning multiple medals at the competition.

Tegen alle adviezen in vrijwillig naar Siberie vertrekken? Op een vlucht met Aeroflot? Via Moscow om vervolgens nooit meer wat van te horen? Terwijl de buitenluchttemperatuur in November daar daalde tot -27'C, daar te gaan wakzwemmen? Nee laat maar, melde mij menigeen.
Dit zou namelijk niet gaan om iets als de Nieuwjaarsduik of een doopaangelegenheid, dit betekende met niets meer dan je normale zwembadbadpak, cap en brilletje gaan voor zo snel mogelijk 25 (alleen en in estafette), 50, 200 en 450 meter zonder stroomvoordeel te zwemmen in water dat overnacht in minstens 7cm ijs wordt omgezet (Stel je iets meer dan 2 nachten en je hebt DE Elfstedentocht!!! Met die snelheid werkten tevens continue kettingzagen, pompen en noeste arbeid om de breuk in het oneindig sereen maagdelijk wittelandschap open te houden....

After a long career as an open water swimmer, Marty Veen of the Netherlands founded the Scheerwolde Classic Swim. A long-time member of the the Dutch (KNZB) Technical Open Water Committee (TOWC) for over 20 years, he retired and was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2014 as an Honour Administrator.
As the innovative chairman of the TOWC, Marty has always been known to put the interests of swimmers first and foremost and has similarly acted positively and proactively for the open water swimming coaches, judges, referees, safety, organizations, the federation. He expertly maintained a fine balance among these players in the Dutch open water swimming world and initiated and/or coordinated the following changes:

Irene van der Laan wordt beschouwd als de lange afstandzwemster met het grootste duurvermogen. Op haar conto staan o.a. naast het 24 uur wereldrecord maar liefst 200 marathons over de gehele wereld. Zij heeft zonder twijfel van alle zwemmers in de wereld de meeste wedstrijdkilometers afgelegd in het water.

The Klein Bonaire Swim is the yearly start of the Regatta week.
This swim competition is being organized by Jong Bonaire and Evy Witlox is our club coordinator for this event.

Every November Swimming World Magazine announces the male and female open water swimmers of the year, and in 2014 that honor went to American Andrew Gemmell for the male open water swimmer of the year and Sharon Van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands as the female open water swimmer of the year.

Erwin Ruijsink zwom gisteren als eerste in zijn eentje van Klein Curaçao naar Curaçao.
Hij legde de ruim 13 kilometer in 3 uur en 36 minuten af en heeft hiermee de eerste officiële solo-oversteek op zijn naam gezet. Tijdens de oversteek had de zwemmer begeleiding van een Frisc van de Koninklijke Marine en een Fina-official afkomstig van Curaçao, Gladwin de Lanoi.

De oversteek van Diana Nyad, binnen haar eigen regels, is geslaagd. Ze is na 52 uur en 54 minuten in Key West, Florida, USA aangkomen.

Diana Nyad heeft vorig jaar al twee pogingen gedaan. Daarvoor ook reeds. Ook anderen hebben pogingen gedaan. Nog nooit is de afstand Cuba - USA zonder haaienkooi gezwommen.

01/09/2013 Bij het open Kroatische kampioenschap marathonzwemmen is Evelien Sohl zevende geworden. De 27-jarige Beverwijkse zwom over de 16 kilometer een tijd van 3.34,46 uur.

Milko Van Gool , who already holds the record for the fastest swim across Lake Malawi in Africa, set his second open water swimming record as he blazed across the 21-mile North Channel in 10 hours 34 minutes.
