Gisteren heb ik meegedaan aan de 56th Toroneos Gulf Swim Crossing, een prachtige zwemwedstrijd van zo'n 25 km in Griekenland tussen de schiereilanden Kassandra en Sithonia in Chalkidike (onder Thessaloniki). De wedstrijd en alles eromheen wordt al 56 jaar volledig gerund door zeer toegewijde vrijwilligers uitt het plaatsje Nikiti.

So grateful I was able to start at all, with lighting at the start, and after finding a selfless kajaker for the first 14,5k until Meilen only last minute: fellow EC and Lake Zurich soloist Tom Rutter, living in Meilen (thanks to Martyn Webster reaching out! OW swim family!)! With his own inflatable kajak which he allowed us to use also for the second part - and he even came with his whole familiy to enjoy the finish atmosphere and pick his kajak up again - after my 12 hour 08 swim.

With an 11 hour 51 minute crossing of the Tsugaru Channel in northern Japan on July 9th, Joe Zemaitis (45, USA, MSF bio here, shown on left above) completed the Oceans Seven. In doing so, Zemaitis became the first person in history to achieve both the Oceans Seven and the Stillwater 8.
Supported by his younger brother John Zemaitis (42, USA, MSF bio here, shown on right above) who also has completed the Stillwater 8 and 6 of the 7 Oceans Seven channels, the older Zemaitis completed his Tsugaru Channel crossing on the last day of his window.

Afgelopen week heeft Henk Labordus, namens Nederland mogen fungeren als official tijdens de World Cup Open Water in Sardinië. Hij omschrijft het als volgt:
'Wat een schitterende ervaring. Veel functies mogen uitvoeren, met als hoogtepunt Chief Referee bij de estafette. Maar 10 teams, maar dat maakte het niet minder makkelijk. Gele vlag, zwemmers de verkeerde kant op en zelfs een officieel protest bij de finish.

The International Ice Swimming Association has announced major updates for the 2026 European Open Championships, all focused on improving the athlete and spectator experience.
The new event layout will make access smoother and crowd movement easier, with a dedicated amphitheatre zone for swimmers to recover, connect, and support their teams.
A lakeside restaurant and coffee hub will add warm food, drinks, and a social space throughout the event.
