IISA (en IISA-Nederland), winterzwemmen (IWSA) en winters zwemmen

Fresh from his team’s record-breaking relay in the English Channel, ice and endurance swimmer John Myatt spoke to us about how they battled the cold and choppy conditions to make it to France

Several possible new records have been set in the English Channel this month – the first ever 5-man winter English Channel relay crossing, which is also the earliest English Channel swim in any calendar year since records began. It’s also believed to be the coldest ever conditions for an English Channel relay (ratification pending).

Amsterdam Ice Swim served as the Dutch Ice Swimming Championship and was held in Jeugdland Amsterdam on December 16th – 17th in 6.40°C water and 9°C air temperatures.

Tiffany Pierrejean ripped off a fast 1000m freestyle, winning the women’s division in 14:20.77, the fastest time overall for the up-and-coming 20-year-old French phenom. Meanwhile, event director Fergil Hesterman pulled double duties as organizer and swimmer.He finished in 14:39.30, first among the men.

IISA 1st European Ice Swimming Championship.

GENERAL
• The Event will be held in a 50m pool; therefore, we omitted the 100 Individual Medley. IISA doesn’t distinguish between short courses and Long courses [Maybe in the future]. World Championship must be held in a 25m pool.

The European Aquatics Federation (LEN) and the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) are proud to announce that they will be working together to promote the sport of Ice Swimming in Europe.

Based on the experience of a successful and professionally delivered 5th edition of the IISA World Championships of Ice Swimming in Samoëns, France on 11-15 January 2023, both parties are keen to begin work closely together to ensure further development of the discipline of ice swimming in Europe.

Zaterdag en zondag 3 en 4 februari 2023 werd in Reeuwijk voor de derde keer de Green Heart Ice Swim gehouden in de surfplas. Het evenement werd georganiseerd door de Surfplas ice swimmers. Een groepje fanatiek winterzwemmers uit Bodegraven-Reeuwijk dat bijna elk weekeind in de Surfplas te vinden is.

Dear Frozen ones,

I am sure many of you have been taken by surprise by this “initiative”. For those of you who are unaware, the people behind this are apparently trying to set up another international Ice Swimming federation to challenge IISA.  At a time when the Ice Swimming community has united as never before under the IISA banner, it is extremely disappointing to see people who have been previously supported and trusted by IISA seemingly using that trust to try to personally benefit from it.

It’s been 14 years since the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) was founded and the term ‘Ice Swimming’ – swimming unassisted in water temperature of 5ºC (41F) with only a silicon cap, goggles and standard swimming costume – was first coined. Now, following the success of the Fifth World Championship in Samoëns, France this January, Founder and Chair Ram Barkai is setting out his vision for the future of the IISA. 

Op zaterdag 4 en zondag 5 februari stappen rond de honderd diehards in het water van de Reeuwijkse Surfplas voor één of meerdere afstanden van de Green Heart Ice Swim. Arthur van Dijk, organisator en voorzitter van de Surfplas Ice Swimmers, geeft een inkijkje in de voorbereidingen.
