Het afgelopen seizoen hebben jullie minder van mij gehoord dan normaal. Ik had te maken gehad met fysieke en mentale tegenslagen, hierdoor is het seizoen spreekwoordelijk in het water gevallen. Toch heb ik mijzelf kunnen herpakken en het seizoen goed kunnen afsluiten. Inmiddels ben ik alweer een aantal maanden flink in training. Het eerste doel is kwalificatie voor de Olympische Spelen van Parijs.

World Open Water Swimming Association Advisory Board’s Decision on Diana Nyad’s 2013 Cuba to Florida Swim Official Statement on the Denial of Ratification for Diana Nyad’s Swim

San Francisco, CA (WOWSA) September 11, 2023 – In August 2013, Diana Nyad undertook her 5th attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida. This endeavor took place after similar Cuba-to-Florida crossings by Walter Poenisch (utilizing a shark cage, with snorkel and fins) and Susan Maroney (utilizing a shark cage, without snorkel and fins).

Following the Diana Nyad crossing, a number of controversies related to the swim were raised and shared publicly by experienced open water swimmers. Some of the controversies can be summarized as follows:

Daniel Slosberg wants me to watch a TV clip. It's from an October 1998 episode of The Roseanne Show. Among the guests is Diana Nyad, who at the time was the most famous female swimmer this country ever produced. Slosberg, a former participant in the niche sport of endurance swimming where Nyad toiled, directs me to the part of the show where Nyad recalled with passion her participation in the Olympic trials, where she claims to have competed as a 17-year-old hoping to secure a spot at the Mexico City Games of 1968.

All Halls of Fame and Honor Organizations wish to create and maintain the highest possible reputation. As a result, all face a similar question: What are the correct and appropriate actions, as well as reasons, which justify an individual (or organization) to be prevented from induction or removed if previously inducted? There are no right answers. Every organization must find its own way.

Zwemmen is niet alleen een uitstekende vorm van lichaamsbeweging, maar het biedt ook talloze voordelen voor de mentale gezondheid.

De Blankenbergse Zwemvereniging eert een icoon: Etienne Van Audenaerde (84) geeft maar liefst een halve eeuw les in de zwemclub. Tienne - die in 1975 nog het Kanaal overzwom - leent zijn naam straks ook aan het nieuwe zwembad. “De leeftijd? Ik ben gezegend met een uitstekende fysiek.”
