6 May 2025 - An open water swimming event firm says it has been forced to close down after the "relentless publicity" over water quality in the River Thames led to a huge drop in numbers entering its swims.
Henley Swim has been running events on the River Thames for over 20 years, including the Henley Swim Festival and the Thames Marathon from Henley to Marlow.

Swimmers who took part in a gruelling eight-mile race from Torquay to Brixham fought off stinging jellyfish to cross the finishing line. Twenty-eight swimmers from all over the country and further afield, ranging in age from late teens to early 60s, took part in the Torbay Swim yesterday (Saturday).
Now known officially as BLDSA Torbay, the event has been running for more than 60 years and is generally considered to be one of the British Long Distance Swimming Association’s toughest events.

De afgelopen jaren heeft het openwaterzwemmen een grote vlucht genomen. Binnenkort is Canary Wharf weer aan de beurt voor een seizoen vol zomerse zwempartijtjes.
Ik weet dat het nu moeilijk voor te stellen is, maar Londen wordt in de zomer best warm. En als die zonnige dagen uiteindelijk besluiten ons te verblijden met hun aanwezigheid, zijn er weinig betere manieren om ze door te brengen dan ondergedompeld in water, toch? Maar als je bedenkt waar je in de hoofdstad een frisse duik kunt nemen, zijn de vele lido’s waarschijnlijk de eerste plekken waar je aan denkt. Een plek waar je waarschijnlijk niet meteen aan denkt, is Canary Wharf. Maar misschien zou dat wel moeten…

The Thames Marathon has announced that it has joined up with two river swims – Le Flow des Gabarriers in the Charente river in the Cognac region of France and the UltraEbre along the Ebro river through Catalonia in Spain to create the new Marathon River Swim Series.

The National Masters Championships is the best chance for club Masters swimmers (aged 18+) to gain bragging rights as the best open water swimmers in the country.

Following the beautiful, meandering River Thames from Farmoor to Godstow, this 10K swim includes three locks with feed stations at each. Simply navigate the locks by exiting the river at marker Buoys, then walking through the lock and re-enter the river at marked points.
